How to be more confident, supporting Women in Business & Beyond. Bridging the gap between Ambition and Wellbeing.
Are you keeping great ideas or something else to yourself because you’re not ready yet, it’s not perfect or you’re afraid of how it will be received? I’m always listening to what you say. As a coach and workshop facilitator communication is very important and listening ranks high on the list of being a great communicator. For years and for some reason more so since lockdown (enforced creativity time I imagine) I’ve been listening to people coming up with great ideas but then talking themselves out of it by saying “I don’t think now is the right time”. The thing about an idea is that it’s up for the taking. If you don’t claim it someone else will, maybe not immediately but at some point. Great ideas can be unique or they can be more commonplace. Those who make the effort or are brave enough to claim the idea will be the ones who receive the credit, whatever that looks like. Whether it’s an idea to write something, for improving a process at work or one you have for creating a social enterprise, the world needs your ideas and input. Please find a way to deliver your idea, project or thoughts, it is the right time. To use the well known quote “If not now when?” So, if you are sitting on a great idea and fearful of delivering it for whatever reason, here are some pointers for you: Are you overthinking it? Sometimes when we overthink things we talk ourselves out of what it is we want to do.
If you have an idea, you can spend a little time answering these questions to replace your overthinking.
How will I feel if someone else claims this? This exercise probably won’t take long at all and once you spend some time recording your responses you will have identified what’s stopping you and reasons to move it forward, which will take you one step closer to sharing it or bringing it into fruition. Who can help or champion you? I always advocate having people around you whom you trust and will champion you. You'll know whether or not they're objective and trustworthy by what they say about others. A little warning once you start truly listening to those around you and notice how they speak about others, it becomes difficult to switch it off, but that’s a conversation for another day. If you have an idea, share it with the wrong person and they run with it instead of you or they spend time shooting holes in it just for the sake of it, this can be challenging. I encourage you to choose wisely who you use as a sounding board to share your ideas. Be braver So this really is for you if you’re an ideas person who never feels quite brave enough to get your idea off the ground and take action. Whether it’s big or small the world needs what you have to say and what you have to offer, I really want you to believe this. If you have an idea and take action not only will you feel a sense of achievement that you’ve managed to implement it, in the grand scheme of things it will help someone else. So be braver share your idea, project or thoughts, no matter how big or small, find a way to get moving and take action. Once you make a start you will be able to move forward, things or events will happen, which will lead you to know the outcome of your idea, whether it’s what you hoped for, expected or not, at least you will know and not be left thinking ‘I wonder what would’ve happened if’ Get in touch if you want to be braver.
